App-arently we’re addicted!
With 85% of people admitting they’d rather forgo water for an entire day than their mobile apps, we at The Practice wonder if we’ve become a nation obsessed!
If you consider the frequency with which you use apps, it’s pretty astounding. We’re awoken by our latest alarm clock app- (Wake Up Time with custom sounds or the Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock are our picks), use our London Tube map to plan our day’s journey, and constantly have our finger on our favourite news apps. And that’s all before we’ve even left the house! Not to mention our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media apps…So as a thanks to the humble app for making our lives much easier, we round up the best that have kept us sane this week.
We’re used to trialling the newest Calendar apps that come our way, but this week, The Practice team have been pretty enamoured with iOS Calendar app, Sunrise. Firstly, we love its bold and modern interface which always makes updating and planning more appealing. Secondly, unlike other run-of-the-mill Calendars, Sunrise has a host of innovative features. We like the 2-week view, vertical timeline, and the fact that the app automatically generates the Facebook or LinkedIn profiles of people you’re scheduled to meet! You can even respond to event invitations there and then, and the easily “swipebable” format makes it easy to plan and create events months into the future.
So, which other apps do we turn to to help our productivity? The Practice team are big fans of our digital notepad, Evernote, particularly as we tend to leave hand-written to-do lists lying around which we never get round to imputing onto our phones. We’ve used the app to snap photos of useful things we want to remember when out and about, we’ve tagged and archived voice and written notes, and on occasion have been known to GPS tag our car when parked in a multi-storey carpark…The best thing is that it also syncs all clipped items across each of your devices.
Like with Evernote, we don’t know how we previously managed without the next app on our list, Dropbox. If you’re a Dropbox user, you’ll know that it’s essentially a Cloud-based storage service that lets you access your files from any of your computers or devices wherever you are. Emailing your files to yourself or carrying a USB around has most definitely become a thing of the past.
And finally, as we’re always reading on the go and tend to get sidetracked by yet another enticing link and article, the web pages can really stack up. Or, we’ll be without Wi-Fi and unable to read some of the things we’d meant to. The app that’s really helped us out here is Read It Later, which lets you save and bookmark articles offline to access at a later date, even without Internet connection.
With smart phone reports revealing that some people use over fifty apps each day, do you think we’ve become over-reliant, or just smart in our tech-savvy approach? And which apps do you turn to on a regular basis? We’d love to hear your top picks and comments, so please follow and tweet to us @PracticeDigital, and send us your thoughts via our Facebook page.
