Hyperlapse: Our review and videos
There’s something inherently satisfying about capturing a good picture, video, or creating a great piece of design. So since The Practice team started using Instagram’s Hyperlapse app, it’s safe to say that we’re finding it to be a highly rewarding tool.
Although most of us have been creating time-lapse style videos for years, Hyperlapse differs in the fact that it offers much better stability thanks to its in-built stabilization feature. This enables users to create professional looking frames, meaning no more “wobbly” videos that are normally associated with hand-held devices. And like other time-lapse apps, Hyperlapse allows users to record videos which you can then speed up, with a playback of between 1x and 12x, depending on the desired effect. Best of all, you don’t have to have a personal Instagram account to use Hyperlapse- the app is a stand-alone, meaning users can edit their creations with an app of their choosing.
So what are the best situations in which to take timelapse videos? The classic example has got to be capturing changes in light throughout the day- from sunrise to sunset for example, although this requires leaving your phone on record mode for a long period of time. Scenarios which capture a lot of movement such as busy street scenes, dancing, and moving traffic also translate well into timelapse videos.
So do we think Hyperlapse is the most creative tool? Perhaps not, especially if we compare it to an app such as Vine. This is probably due to the fact that time-lapse videos are still inevitably going to look “shakier”, regardless of stabilization, and since there is no stop-start feature as with Vine, the capacity for creating cool visual effects is limited. Also, there’s no audio capability as of yet, although we’re sure this will be the next thing Instagram will be adding. We’d also love to be able to import our existing videos to edit with Hyperlapse at some point in the future too, so we hope that will materialise soon.

Have you tried Hyperlapse yet? How do you think it compares to other time-lapse video apps? We’d love to hear your thoughts and see your videos too, so please share them with us on Twitter (@PracticeDigital), and on our Facebook page.
