We’re app-reciative!
We’re sure you’re aware by now that The Practice team love entertainment variety. Reading, visiting the latest events, endless web surfing; you name it, one of us will probably be an aficionado! The problem is, we tire easily of routine. That’s where apps come in- they’re perfect for offering endless diversity. To revel in their genius, today we round up the ones we’re loving this week. (But Android users look away now- strictly for iPhone owners only!!)
1. Phlip for iPhone and iPad
Although this is generally aimed at children, we shamelessly admit enjoying Phlip a great deal. The app allows you to take a photo and then transform it into a tile puzzle for another user to solve. Great for appealing to our inner photographer as well as our penchant for complicating matters…
2. Skitch (now on iPhone!)
We’re happy to see the previously iPad only app now on iPhone. Skitch is a great scribbling tool by Evernote so you can annotate any pictures and photos to share and send by email.
3. FixYa
This app has kinda saved us this week! Some of our team have found themselves with some pressing and bewildering household problems, but this app has fortunately provided easy and quick solutions on the go! FixYa does what it says when it comes to telling you how to fix/mend/operate tech and home items that you really should know, but don’t…Aside from the usual Q&A system, users can also film themselves asking questions and receive video responses from the 25 million expert users too. Not entertainment in the traditional sense, but it’s fun to find out solutions you wouldn’t know otherwise.
4. Vapp
Now this is camera-app perfection. Do you ever find yourself taking pictures, only to have frustratingly realized you’ve slid the slider to ‘record’ instead? Or picture blurriness has resulted from shaky hands? Vapp takes snaps by voice-control, and allows you to set a personal trigger sound.
5. Gojee
Calling all lazy creatives- this app is definitely for us when it comes to dinner preparation. Sure, we love being inventive in the kitchen, but sometimes the lure of a comfy sofa can ignore the cries of an empty cupboard! Gojee allows you to imput the miserable leftover contents of your fridge or pantry. It then offers a variety of suggestions you can create. It’s also great for entering other items for when you want to plan ahead for an impressive meal.
Last week also introduced the First Annual Appsters Awards to celebrate achievement in the apps industry. The event, held at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens saw 12 winners from over 200 nominees, including the BBC Olympics app, which won the Best entertainment app award. We were particularly pleased to see a win from social music app Soundrop, which won the award for Best Start-up app. The Awards are proof that apps really are the new and celebrated hub of tech entertainment- we at The Practice certainly know we’re hooked!
Now let’s hear your top picks! And how do you stay technologically entertained? Are apps your thing, or a web-browse here or there, or maybe you’re just a plain-old Kindle reader? We’d love to hear your comments as always, so please tweet to us @PracticeDigital and ‘like’ us on Facebook.
