Social Media Day 2015: How the world celebrated
June 30th marked the sixth annual Social Media day, first launched by Mashable back in 2010. Today, the event is recognised globally, as like-minded individuals come together to celebrate and discuss all things social media. So how did our fellow digital fans mark the occasion this year?
Across the US, events were held to honour the way in which social media has transformed the digital landscape throughout the past decade. In Chicago, the city hosted its annual celebrations, recognizing some of the best local social media talents and their achievements over the past year. In Palm Coast Florida, things were a little more socially-focused, as opposed to awards-based. The city’s event was free to all those who had an active Twitter account, active Instagram account, or to Facebook business page managers, and offered the chance for members of the public to mingle with local companies and social media influencers. Complimentary appetizers and an open bar featuring a signature Social Media Day cocktail were also highlights of the event. And in the true spirit of social media trends, the celebration also hosted a “Twofie” (two-person selfie) contest!
Twitter was awash with tweets using Mashable’s designated Social Media Day hash tag, #SMDay, as users joyfully marked the occasion. Tweeters were quick to show their love for some of social media’s many benefits, with one stating: “What’s the biggest wow factor of social media? I get the news before the news.” We couldn’t agree more! Other observations included one Twitter user stating- “Social media is a commitment!” while one noted how much smaller the world feels now, thanks to social media’s power to connect people around the globe. Charities such as UNICEF, celebrated the day by reminding followers of the power of social media to speak out for children’s rights, while others asked users to tweet about how social media has changed their lives for the better. But what we loved to see most of all, was the way in which social media marketers and influencers reacted to the day. One social media professional commented that for him and his colleagues, Social Media Day was simply an every day event, while we loved this tweet from another user, stating: “Happy #SMDay to all the people who constantly have to battle the “you tweet for a living!?” comments.”
